Wrist Sprain
Causes
Anyone can experience a wrist sprain, but they are most common in sports such as gymnastics and football. Sprains also commonly occur in falls on an outstretched hand.
Symptoms
Pain is common in wrist sprains and can range in severity depending on the extent of the injury. Swelling, bruising, loss of function, and popping sensations are also symptoms of wrist sprains.
Diagnosis
Physicians will conduct a thorough exam of the hand, wrist, and arm, in addition to assessing symptoms and medical history. X-rays may also be used to determine the location, severity, and any other injuries.
Treatment
Mild wrist sprains are often treated with ice, rest, and by elevating the arm. Moderate sprains can be treated with a splint and over the counter pain medications. Severe sprains where one or more ligaments are completely torn will require surgery to restore proper function.
