Suprascapular Neuropathy

Suprascapular neuropathy is a condition that causes pain or weakness in the shoulder due to an irritated nerve that travels from the neck through the shoulder. This chronic condition is rare and is typically not diagnosed until other shoulder injuries are ruled out.

Causes

Suprascapular neuropathy occurs when the suprascapular nerve is stretched or compressed. Because the shoulder blade has limited room for the nerve, a number of conditions can lead to compression, including cysts, excessive traction from a winged scapula, and rotator cuff tears.

Symptoms

Shoulder pain is the most common symptom of suprascapular neuropathy. The shoulder may also feel weak. In some cases, weakness will occur without pain.

Diagnosis

In addition to assessing symptoms and a physical examination, there are a number of diagnostic studies that can help to identify suprascapular neuropathy. These tests include electromyography/nerve conduction studies, fluoroscopic (x-ray)-guided or ultrasound-guided injections, and MRI.

Treatment

Suprascapular neuropathy can be treated with rest, pain medications, and physical therapy. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
